A complete academic transcript includes all courses, grades, and degrees, issued by the school or university. In the U.S., transcripts are sent directly between institutions, while in other countries, they are often given to students to forward. Transcripts must be sealed to prevent tampering. Always request extra copies from your institution. If the institution does not provide this service, consider alternative certification. As a last resort, send a copy of your original transcript with an explanation and request guidance from the receiving school on acceptable certification methods.
Standardized Tests
Key standardized tests for U.S. universities:
- GRE: Required for non-business programs.
- GMAT: Mandatory for business programs (e.g., MBA, MS in Finance).

Register early for standardized tests, as centers fill quickly, and computer-based formats need six weeks’ advance registration. Take exams six months before deadlines to allow 4–6 weeks for score reporting. List universities for direct reporting during registration to save time. Start applications early, even if scores are pending, as standardized tests are important but not the sole admission criteria.
- Early Registration: Test centers fill quickly; register at least six weeks prior.
- Planning Ahead: Take exams 6 months before application deadlines.
- Score Reporting: Scores take 4–6 weeks; indicate universities for direct reporting.
- Admission Criteria: TOEFL/standardized scores are important but not the only factor.
- Timely Applications: Start early, even if test scores are pending.
Letters of Recommendation
In most institutions, the candidate is required to submit two to three letters of recommendation. Someone who can specifically comment on your academic achievements or professional potential, such as professors or employers, writes these letters.
Some universities provide a special form for the letters of recommendation. If possible, you should submit your recommendation on the forms provided.
Statement of Purpose
Most graduate programs demand a personal biography, commonly called a Statement of Purpose. The formats and questions may vary from institution to institution. The statement of purpose is an opportunity to present you as an excellent candidate for admission. The statement of purpose need not be too lengthy, but should include at least three basic components:
- Personal introduction and description of previous academic history.
- Immediate academic interest.
- Future professional and academic objectives.
Give some thoughts to demonstrate the opportunity for you to pursue graduate study will ultimately benefit others.
Documents attesting Financial Soundness
International students must submit their sponsor’s current bank statement showing funds for tuition and living expenses for one academic year to meet the INS requirements for issuing the I-20 visa document. Although this document is part of the application package, it typically does not impact admission decisions. If applying for financial assistance, students should describe their financial situation on the application form.
Application Fee
Most universities also require an application fee, which must be paid to initiate consideration of the application. These fees may range from $25 to $100.
